Id-Cooling Frozn A620 Pro SE CPU Cooler Review

Cooling, Reviews

Tower style CPU coolers might be big, heavy and hard to work around, but when properly designed and deployed their temperatures tend to compare nicely to those of similarly-sized closed-loop radiator systems. That seems like a great way for smart buyers to save money, as long as they handle their completed systems gently. Whether Id-Cooling’s double 120mm tower cooler can live up to that standard at a price of only $40 is subject for today’s test.

Inside the box are the twin radiator cooler, a fan splitter cable, an installation guide, a tube of Id-Cooling’s Frost X25 thermal paste, six fan clips, an Intel socket support plate, four standoffs, four top nuts for the standoffs, two AMD brackets, two Intel brackets, and two AS-120-S (2000 RPM) fans.

Containing six heat pipes to the CPU’s heat spreader, the A620 Pro SE’s copper base appears to be lathe cut and lightly polished prior to applying its nickel-plated finish. Also notice the captive nut at the end of the plate, which is secured with a pressed-on clip.

While multi-fit CPU coolers usually include separate standoffs for AMD and Intel processors, Id-Cooling was smart enough to use AMD’s unusual thread on its Intel socket support plate. That way, only one set of standoffs were needed.

The standoffs screw into either the factory AMD socket support plate or the Intel socket plate provided in the kit, as shown at the bottom of this photo. Brackets are then attached across the tops of the standoffs and secured with included nuts, as shows at the top of the photo.

The mounting plate’s captive nuts are then screwed onto the central studs of the cross brackets before clipping the center fan into position.

Though the heat sink’s front fins are cut away at the bottom to provide around 60mm of DIMM clearance, the remaining restriction is whether you’ll be able to fit the 120mm front fan between any extra-tall memory and a cases’ side panel. We just dodged the issue by using standard-profile memory.

Test Results

The A620 Pro SE starts and finishes its run in a tie with the Dark Rock Pro 5, with both displaying similar temperatures to 240mm liquid coolers like the VATN 2400 and the MasterLiquid 240L Core.

Motherboard voltage regulators are typically designed to get their cooling from nearby fans. Air coolers that blow more air under their own heatsink tend to offer a greater benefit to the motherboard’s heat sink, so the A620 Pro SE’s loss here may have been a gain in the previous chart.

The A620 Pro SE’s fans are also whisper quiet, to the point that some users won’t here them once inside a case.

Finally, with a price of only $40, the A620 Pro SE offers more than twice the performance per dollar of its expensive rivals.

In fact, the only probable we experienced with the Frozn A620 Pro SE was that its decorative facades started peeling when our system got hot, turning a $40 cooler that looks and performance at twice its price into something that doesn’t look as nice. We’re not certain which conditions will cause or prevent this from happening, but at this low price we’re betting that you’ll take your chances.

Id-Cooling Frozn A620 Pro SE (EAN: 6931393305646)
Pros:Cons:
Cools like an expensive model
As quiet as an expensive model
Surpremely inexpensive.
Decorative inlays may peel under certain conditions
The Verdict:
While the potential peeling of decorative inlays undercuts its quality appearance, the Frozn A620 Pro SE’s low price and top performance are causes for budget builders to take their chances.
